Warehouse worker fined RM3,000 for writing bomb threat message on parcel at KLIA cargo centre4/30/2024 A warehouse worker who pleaded guilty to writing a threatening bomb threat message on a parcel ready for shipment at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Cargo Centre last week was fined RM3,000 and sentenced to four days in prison by the Magistrates’ Court here today.
The accused, Muhammad Rozali Rahim, 23, made the admission when the charge was read before Magistrate Muhammad Bukhori Md Ruslan. He was accused of intentionally causing criminal intimidation to another person by writing the threatening message on a parcel at the cargo centre’s scanning machine at 11.42am last Thursday. The accused, who was unrepresented, was charged under Section 506 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of two years imprisonment or a fine, or both, upon conviction. The court imposed a fine of RM3,000 and sentenced him to four days in prison from the date of arrest, and an additional two months in prison if he fails to settle the fine. The case was handled by deputy public prosecutor Nur Sabrina Zubairi. Previously, KLIA District police chief, ACP Azman Sha’riat, confirmed that the suspect was arrested last Thursday after the police received a report regarding a bomb threat incident at the GTR KLIA cargo scanning machine on that day. He stated that the suspect was apprehended after being summoned to the KLIA District police headquarters to provide a statement. “The suspect admitted during initial questioning that he had written the word ‘bomb’ on the plastic packaging as a joke but did not have a chance to erase it because the package had already been taken by a courier agent,” he said. Azman advised the public, including courier companies, to refrain from making any written or verbal remarks regarding bombs or any explosive materials. Police smashed the ‘Geng Bob’ drug trafficking syndicate with the arrest of five men in a housing estate in Hulu Bernam, Hulu Selangor, on Sunday.
Hulu Selangor district police chief Supt Ahmad Faizal Tahrim said the suspects, aged between 21 and 59, were arrested in a raid at 10.50pm. They had family ties and had been actively involved in drug distribution for the past six to eight months, he said. Police also seized three compressed slabs of dried leaves suspected to be ganja, weighing approximately 2.5 kilogrammes and valued at RM7,762.40, in a house, as well as three Yamaha 125z motorcycles worth RM21,000. He said the suspects included a barber, a lorry driver and a lorry attendant. Checks revealed that three of them have eight criminal records related to drug cases. “The five suspects have been remanded for seven days until May 5 under Section 117 of the Penal Code,” he said in a statement yesterday. He said the case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which provides for the death sentence or life imprisonment and at least 15 strokes of whipping on conviction. A High Court here yesterday sentenced a foreign man to 40 years’ jail plus 12 strokes of the cane for murdering a Grab driver five years ago.
Justice Leonard David Shim imposed the sentence on Arsit Indanan, 23, after finding the latter guilty of a charge under Section 302 of the Penal Code. In his reserved decision, the judge held that the defence had failed to cast reasonable doubt on the prosecution’s case. Arsit, who was represented by government-assigned counsel Mohd Ari Nadzrah Abd Rahman, was ordered to serve his jail term from the date of his arrest. Muhammad Hanafiee Jaffar, 27, was killed by Arsit inside a car at the roadside of Jalan Marabahai in Tuaran between 4am and 5am on May 25, 2019. Previously, Arsit, who is undocumented, was jointly charged with his friend Amru Al Asy Japri, 27, when both of them were passengers of the deceased on the incident day. However, on January 31, 2023, Amru was given a discharge not amounting to an acquittal by the same court from the murder charge. Amru had written a representation letter through his lawyers to the deputy public prosecutor’s office and it was accepted. He then became the first witness to testify against Arsit in the prosecution stage trial. The prosecution had succeeded to establish a prima facie case against Arsit, who was then called to answer his defence. For Arsit’s defence, the judge ruled among others on Monday that it was an afterthought, a bare denial and lack of credible evidence. The prosecution had called 23 witnesses to testify against Arsit since the trial commenced on May 8, 2023. The police arrested four men over a scuffle at a Hindu temple in Raub on Sunday.
Raub district police chief Supt Mohd Shahril Abd Rahman said all four, aged 23 to 44, were arrested on Sunday in the district around 8pm. He said police received information about the incident at 2.46 pm before a police team went to the scene to control the situation and preliminary investigations found that the cause of the fight involved a group of men consisting of 10 to 15 people. “There were individuals who wanted to remove their vehicles from the temple area but the route was blocked by a row of other vehicles which caused a verbal argument leading to a fight and two four-wheel drive vehicles were damaged in the scuffle. “The fight also resulted in injuries to three men and they were taken to Raub Hospital for treatment,” he said in a statement today. Mohd Shahril said efforts to track down other suspects were ongoing and the individuals involved in the fight were asked to come forward to assist in the investigation. The case is being investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting in public places using weapons, he said. Ex-cops' death sentences commuted to 40 years in jail for killing mechanic in Selangor 18 years ago4/30/2024 Two former policemen escaped the gallows after the Federal Court’s three-member panel today commuted the death sentences imposed on them to 40 years in jail for the murder of an Indonesian mechanic 18 years ago.
The panel comprising Chief Justice Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat and Federal Court judges Datuk Nordin Hassan and Datuk Vazeer Alam Mydin Meera allowed Ailias Yahya and Saiful Azlan Shah Abdullah’s review applications under the Revision of Sentence of Death and Imprisonment for Natural Life (Temporary Jurisdiction of the Federal Court) Act 2023. The duo, who have been incarcerated in prison for 18 years and three months, were ordered to serve jail sentences from the date of their arrest on January 22, 2006. The court, earlier rejected deputy public prosecutor Tetralina Ahmed Fauzi’s request to uphold the death sentence on the two former policemen as she said their case falls under the rarest of the rare category. She told the court that the deceased Yusrizal Yusuf, 38, was under full control of the two men at all times, from the time of his arrest until his death. Tetralina said Yusrizal was shot “execution style” when he was brought to an open space field at KM22, Kuala Lumpur-Kuala Selangor-Batu Arang road, in Gombak, Selangor. He was handcuffed and was told to kneel down and Saiful Azlan fired three shots to his head at close range while Ailias stood in front of the deceased. Lawyer Muhammad Fadhli Sutris representing Ailias and Saiful Azlan, however, urged the court to give his clients a second chance saying that Ailias is suffering from a chronic disease and is wheel-chair bound while Saiful Azlan had been admitted to ICU several times. He said Ailias who had served the Royal Malaysia Police since 1976 and Saiful Azlan worked with the police force since 1982 regretted what they had done and asked for mercy from the court as they wanted to meet their families. Ailias, 70, a former corporal and Saiful Azlan, 60, a former lance corporal, were sentenced to death by the Shah Alam High Court in 2011 for killing Yusrizal at Ladang Caledonia KM22 between 10.00 pm and 11.30 pm on Jan 13, 2006. They lost their appeals in the Court of Appeal and Federal Court to overturn their convictions and death sentences. According to the facts of the case, the deceased was alleged to have had an affair with the wife of a man who had then lodged a police report after the deceased had threatened him. A 37-year-old man was killed while two others sustained light injuries in an accident involving two cars at Jalan Tun Jugah here in the early hours of Sunday.
The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) identified the deceased as Bong Kee Tze. Bomba said they were notified about the incident at 3.38am and firefighters from the Tabuan Jaya fire station were despatched to the scene. “The accident involved two cars and the driver of one of the cars was trapped in the vehicle. “The victim was extricated from the car and was handed over to the paramedics, who pronounced him dead at the scene,” it added. After ensuring that the situation was safe and under control, the firefighters ended their operation at 4.50am. A police officer with the rank of Inspector who was arrested on suspicion of physically sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl on April 22 will be suspended from duty.
Johor police chief CP M Kumar said that the 29-year-old man’s remand period ends today and he will be released on police bail. “The suspect is in the process of suspension from duty and the letter will be issued after receiving instructions from Bukit Aman. “A suspension from duty will be imposed until the case is decided in court,” he said at a press conference at the Johor contingent police headquarters (IPK) here today. The man was arrested in Seri Alam on April 22 after a police report was lodged by the victim on the same day the incident, believed to have occurred in Taman Johor Jaya, here. He said that the policeman, stationed at the Pontian district police headquarters (IPD) was remanded from April 23 until today and the case was investigated under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017. The Kelantan Customs foiled an attempt to smuggle in 2.6 million sticks of contraband cigarettes worth RM1.7 million (inclusive of tax) in the Tumpat district on April 24.
Kelantan Customs Department director Wan Jamal Abdul Salam Wan Long said raids were carried out in Kampung Pasir Pekan Hilir and Sungai Kelantan on April 24. Wan Jamal said the cigarettes seized during both the raids were worth RM556,400, excluding tax. He added that during the raids, 900,000 sticks of ‘heat cigarettes’ worth RM270,000 were also seized. Wan Jamal said based on information gathered from the ground, these cigarettes were being sold at RM8 for a pack of 20 sticks compared with the market price of RM14 for the same pack. He added that the cigarettes produced in Europe were being smuggled into Malaysia via a neighbouring country. “The modus operandi used by the smuggling syndicate is to bring these consignments through Sungai Golok and hide the stock in a secured place to ensure their movement is safe, before distributing it in the market,” he said adding that the case would be investigated under Section 135(1)(e) of the Customs Act 1967. A policeman with the rank of Corporal was charged in the Sessions Court here today on two counts of accepting bribes in return for smuggling in prohibited item to a lock-up detainee three years ago.
The accused, Muhamad Alif Abdul Jamal, 33, however, pleaded not guilty after the charges were read before Judge Mohd Azhar Othman. According to the charges, the accused, who was then on duty at Chukai police station lockup, allegedly received a bribe of RM1,000 on April 17 and RM450 on November 30, 2021, from Jainah Mohamed Abdullah to smuggle tobacco into the lockup for Mohd Firdaus Mohd Zahid. The accused is charged with committing an offence under Section 17(a) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009 and can be punished according to Section 24 of the same law which provides for a maximum prison sentence of 20 years and a fine of not less than five times the value of the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher, upon conviction. Deputy public prosecutor Mariah Omar and prosecuting officer Nur Raihan Mohd Yusof appeared for the prosecution while the accused was represented by lawyer Masliela Ismail. Mariah offered bail of RM15,000 for both charges in one surety and additional conditions that the accused not to approach prosecution witnesses, surrender his passport to the court and report to the MACC office every month until the disposal of the case. Masliela appealed for a lower bail on the grounds that her client supports both of his parents who have health problems. Judge Mohd Azhar allowed the accused bail of RM4,000 in one surety and additional conditions submitted by the prosecution. The court set June 5 for case management. The Sessions Court here today sentenced two men, captured on a vehicle’s dashcam snatching a 58-year-old visually impaired woman’s handbag at Taman Desa Wira in Batu Kawa last week, to 10 years in prison and 10 lashes each.
Judge Musli Ab Hamid convicted Amirudin Bakeri, 21, and Abang Nur Arifin Abang Ali Munawir, 31, on their own guilty pleas to a charge under Section 394 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34 of the same Code. This Section carries a maximum jail term of 20 years and caning or a fine upon conviction. The crime occurred at 7.56am on April 22 at Taman Desa Wira in Batu Kawa. The victim was walking alone by the roadside when the two men, on a motorcycle, attempted to snatch her handbag. She managed to hang on the handbag until a passerby stopped his car to help her. The incident left her with injuries. One of the snatchers was detained by a bystander, while the other escaped but he was apprehended at 5pm on the same day at old Kuching Airport Road. During an identification parade, witnesses confirmed that Amirudin and Abang Nur Arifin were the assailants. DPP Iezzah Iburdanisha Ibrahim prosecuted the case, while neither Amirudin nor Abang Nur Arifin had legal representation. Insp Nyaum Ringkai led the investigation and supported by Sgt Azmi Roslan. |
