 TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Cabinet warned Thursday of charity fraud related to Hualien disaster relief fundraising.
The Cabinet cautioned that criminals are sending fake SMS messages, creating fake websites, or impersonating government or charity organizations to exploit public goodwill. It added that fraudsters may trick donors by claiming there is a need for “online identity verification” or “digital financial certification.” The government encouraged recipients of suspicious donation requests to contact the 165 Anti-Scam Hotline. Also, suspicious websites can be verified through the Ministry of Digital Affairs’ Fraudbuster tool. The overflow of the Mataian barrier lake in Hualien led to loss of life and extensive damage.
