TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A heavy leak from the roof of the Daniao Tunnel in Taitung County caused a circuit failure that disrupted train lines in southern Taiwan.

The Taiwan Railways Corporation (TRC) announced that all train traffic between Dawu Train Station and Longxi Train Station was suspended due to an electrical failure in the Daniao Tunnel. The conductive rails on the southbound tracks suffered a short circuit at approximately 12:40 p.m.

Trains were reportedly stuck at platforms in Dawu and Longxi Stations for over an hour before commuters were informed of the situation. Due to the disruption, travelers waiting for southbound service to resume at Taitung Train Station also began to crowd the main lobby.

A maintenance crew was dispatched to inspect the tunnel and repair the damaged circuit. Upon investigation, the crew discovered a significant leak in the roof of the tunnel, which required additional materials and an engineering crew to repair.

The second crew arrived on site at 1:30 p.m. TRC maintenance personnel worked throughout the afternoon to repair the train line and ensure the structural integrity of the tunnel. Some traffic resumed shortly after 6 p.m., with all trains running normally by 7 p.m.
