Taiwan–Matsu cable damaged off Dongyin

4/8/2026

Communications to Matsu’s Dongyin remained stable after damage was found in part of an undersea cable off its coast, with traffic redirected to keep services running.

The Ministry of Digital Affairs said the issue involved the Taiwan–Matsu No. 3 cable, where some internal core lines were damaged about 2.64 kilometers offshore, but data was rerouted without interruption.

Chunghwa Telecom reported the fault late Tuesday night and quickly shifted network traffic to backup capacity. Officials said the damage affected only part of the cable’s transmission capability rather than the entire system, allowing normal service to continue.

Authorities are coordinating with a cable repair vessel while examining the cause of the failure. The ministry said the situation has not impacted day-to-day communications in Dongyin.

Repairs could be completed as early as July 2026, depending on sea conditions, per the report. Officials also urged the public to rely on verified information and avoid spreading unconfirmed reports.
