TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taichung's Water Resources Bureau Director Fan Shi-yi (范世億) on Tuesday outlined four flood control strategies to upgrade drainage and cut flood risks ahead of the rainy season.

The city government said Tuesday that the bureau will push ahead with creek fixes, regional drainage upgrades, rainwater sewer projects, and smart flood control systems to cut flood risks. It added that crews will speed up dredging and inspections.

The bureau noted that it checks mountain creeks and farm roads before each flood season and tries to fix issues quickly after storms to keep routes open. It added that retention ponds are inspected year-round under set rules so they can hold water during downpours.

Reporters reported that Taichung plans to dredge about 90 kilometers of drainage channels and 20 kilometers of rainwater sewers this year. Since 2019, dozens of sewer projects have attained central government funding, with more now in the pipeline.

The city also said smart flood systems now track rainfall and water levels and send alerts to help crews act fast. Residents were urged to check the Taichung Water Information app to stay on top of local flood risks.
