Takagi Ramen is on to something. First, they rolled out prawn noodles with mealworms, then cockles bubble tea, and most recently, matcha ramen. Little did we know the ramen chain would launch mala coffee—an odd combination we’ve never seen or imagined—at all outlets.

My colleague and I got a cup of their Chongqing Mala Coffee ($4.90), which comes in one size. As the name suggests, it features iced coffee with a layer of mala sauce, which we assume is from their mala ramen series.

We tore open the paper lid to get a better look at the Sichuan sauce, and quite frankly, we were shocked by the huge portion. An entire scoop of mala sauce, made using chilli oil and coriander bits, was floating atop our iced coffee.

Naturally, we were intimidated by its appearance, but went in for a sip nonetheless. Given the numbing, tongue-tingling sensation of Sichuan peppercorns, which are the key ingredients of mala, you can already imagine how the drink tastes. We barely tasted any coffee, as the mala sauce was overpowering after giving the beverage a good mix.

In hindsight, drinking it straight without mixing both components might have been a better choice. Consider yourself warned: only try the Chongqing Mala Coffee if you can tolerate spice.

There are more than 10 Takagi Ramen outlets scattered across the country, and if you’re curious about how this strange combination tastes, drop by any of their eateries to see it for yourself. Do note that this mala coffee is available for a limited time only.
