Sinkhole forces closure of Jalan Merbau in Miri city centre

A large sinkhole estimated to be more than one-metre deep has appeared along Jalan Merbau in the city centre here, forcing the closure of the road this morning.

Councillor Tan Lek Jin said he received a complaint from members of the public around 11am regarding the sinkhole.

He immediately went to the site to inspect the situation and found that serious soil erosion had occurred beneath the road, affecting two lanes.

“As a safety measure, the road has been closed temporarily to prevent any untoward incidents,” he said when contacted today.

​Road users have been advised to take alternative routes by making a detour at the nearby mosque or using other connecting roads around Jalan Merbau.

Tan also urged motorists to remain cautious and follow safety instructions while the authorities carry out repair works.
