Suspected militants have attacked a bus station and entered police barracks in India's Punjab state, killing four people and wounding at least six.

Senior police officer Dinkar Gupta told the Associated Press that the attackers are believed to have come from Indian-administered Kashmir.

They hijacked a car and then fired at a bus station before entering a police station in Gurdaspur, a border town.

A firefight is continuing at the police station, reports say.

The state-run All India Radio said four to five armed men had "fired upon a bus, injuring some passengers" at the bus station.

It is not yet clear whether the four dead were passengers. The rebels then drove to a police station and entered it.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh said security forces had been sent to the spot.

Indian media reports said the police station was close to the border with Pakistan, and that the attackers came dressed in military uniform.
