A 36-year-old man was arrested for allegedly assaulting a police officer with a cleaver during the Sarawak Regatta at the Kuching Waterfront on Sunday.

Kuching police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the incident occurred when the police officer with the rank of inspector was conducting a crime prevention patrol in the area.

“The inspector was assaulted by the suspect, who tried to slash him with the cleaver, leaving a small tear on the officer’s left uniform sleeve – fortunately, the victim was unharmed.

“It is learnt that the suspect has two prior criminal records and he was found negative for drugs,” Alexson said in a statement.

The case is being investigated under Section 332 of the Penal Code, which provides for imprisonment of up to three years, or a fine, or both upon conviction.

Those with information on the incident can contact the Kuching District Police Headquarters on 082-244444 or investigating officer Insp Ridzainuddin Rosley on 010-9431449.
