Armed police raided a Birmingham flat in an operation linked to Wednesday's terror attack in Westminster.
Armed officers stormed a second-floor flat above a row of shops on Hagley Road in Ladywood at about 23:00 GMT on Wednesday. A witness to the raid said: "They came and arrested three men." The Metropolitan Police confirmed officers have raided six addresses in total in London and Birmingham and made five arrests Four people died when an attacker drove a car along a pavement in Westminster, stabbed a policeman and was shot dead by police in the grounds of Parliament. A further 29 had been treated in hospital, with seven remaining in a critical condition. BBC Newsnight reported the car used in the attack in Westminster was hired from a company in the Birmingham area and further sources have claimed it was rented in Solihull. However, this has not been confirmed. Following the armed raid on Hagley Road, non-uniformed police officers were spotted taking pieces of equipment into the property. West Midlands Police later said: "Overnight our colleagues from the Metropolitan Police have searched a number of addresses across the country and have made a number of arrests in connection with the [Westminster] incident, including addresses in Birmingham. "The arrests and searches were intelligence led and there was no immediate risk to public safety." The BBC asked West Midlands Police if they meant more than one address had been raided in Birmingham, but they refused to say. |
