PETALING JAYA: A former Johor menteri besar has urged federal and state authorities to prepare for opportunities presented by the Rapid Transit System Link which is under construction.

Mohamed Khaled Nordin said he has been a strong advocate of the project which is due for completion in December 2026.

The RTS will link the Bukit Chagar station to Woodlands in Singapore. Its developer, MRT Corporation Sdn Bhd, said a single trip should take only 15 minutes.

Khaled said the link will open many opportunities for both Singaporeans and Malaysians, especially the people of Johor and benefit the services, retail, property and tourism sectors.

“RTS will also increase the investment attractiveness of Iskandar Malaysia because of the 15-minute commute between the two cities. The Johor state government should establish and expand the function of the Johor economic, trade and cultural office in Singapore to boost trade and investment as soon as possible.”

Khaled also said authorities should already look at enhancing connectivity in Johor to cater for the inflow and outflow of people once the link is complete.

“We need to look at improving tourism in Johor through top-notch attractions and events.”

Malaysian Tourist Guides Council president Jimmy Leong said he was looking forward to the RTS’ completion, saying it was a project which should have become a reality a decade ago.

“Johor especially needs the flow of visitors from Singapore. The tourists’ dollars will benefit various businesses. It’s importance cannot be understated.”
