It would not be wrong to say that expectations were high for 4Minute’s new mini-albumCrazy. After all, Cube Entertainment broke news of their comeback, stating that it will feature a ‘revamped’ concept that fans have never seen from the girls. And 4Minute certainly did not disappoint. The six-track Crazy features a collection of quirky but oh-so-addictive hip-hop and EDM numbers that are a step up from the group’s earlier albumWhatcha Doin’ Today.
Given that 4Minute is often labelled as one of the top K-pop girl groups, along with Girls’ Generation, 2NE1 and SISTAR, it was understandable when some fans might have been a little dissatisfied with the forgettable 4Minute World they rolled out last year. But 4Minute certainly redeemed themselves this year with two strong title tracks ‘Crazy’ and ‘Cold Rain’. Unlike ‘Whatcha Doin' Today’ and ‘What's Your Name?’ from their last two EPs (which was produced by Brave Brothers), ‘Crazy’ adopts a more edgy direction. It is intense and fierce right from the beginning, and the pairing of HyunA’s rapid-fire rap and Gayoon’s more subtle delivery makes the song instantly likeable.
‘Cold Rain’ is the only slow jam on the album and it is also the first time 4Minute is promoting a ballad as the title track. The sentimental number received rave reviews from netizens when it was pre-released on January 25 and it is easy to see why. Jiyoon and Gayoon particularly shine in the chorus but the remaining members are also even adequate time to showcase their vocal versatility. The ultra-cool ‘Cut It Out’ might be banned from public broadcast by KBS, but just like ‘Show Me’, the mish-mash of pop and hip-hop makes it one of the strongest songs on Crazy. Sohyun and Jiyoon show off their songwriting skills on ‘Tickle Tickle Tickle’ and ‘Stand Out’ respectively – two cheeky dance tunes that are likely to be popular on the club floor.
