But what we enjoy today is far from a natural state of affairs. Our pioneers worked hard to bring different communities together, through events and celebrations, and through deliberate policies on housing, education and the National Service. Religious and community leaders have built personal friendships and trust with one another. They discuss sensitive issues that arise with mutual respect and give and take. At the OnePeople.sg Community Leaders’ Conference this morning, I emphasised the importance of this harmony to our multi-religious and open society. We must stay vigilant, strengthen our ties and harmony, and ensure that future generations understand these complexities and work together to resolve issues amicably. We can be of different races and religions, but we are first and foremost, Singaporeans. You can watch my speech here: http://bit.ly/1OQ7EYC."
